Description and History

Wolfpack Hustle is a bicycle crew that hosts a weekly, fast paced bicycle ride in live traffic through the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. The came to be known as The Hustle Ride. It was created by commuter and sporting cyclists who enjoyed the camaraderie and scenery of the urban social bicycle rides (chiefly Midnight Ridazz) being held at the time, but wanted to have the same experience at a faster pace and with fewer stops. The ride was originally inspired by The Tron Ride, an experimental Midnight Ridazz ride that featured 3 routes, one of which was a fast paced jaunt to the city of Commerce. By late 2005 this fast paced night ride was being organized on a semi regular basis. The informal and un-named rides consisted of 5-10 riders meeting at Tang's Donut in Silverlake California. The phrase "Tang's at Ten" was often used to round up the posse of commuter cyclists. In late 2006 the two chief organizers decided to publicize the ride on the Midnight Ridazz, LA Fixed and Bikeboom websites calling it Wolfpack!! and then eventually Wolfpack Hustle. The first public invite ride drew 30 participants and rode to the City of Commerce. The ride itself has inspired many more fast paced night rides in the Los Angeles area including Cubcamp, GOGA, Juggernauts, The Badger Song, Bicikillers, Tuesday Night Special and others.

The Wolfpack Hustle rolls out every Monday from Tang's Donut on Sunset and Fountain in Silverlake at 10:00 PM. A typical Wolfpack ride will be from 30 to 40 miles long. Wolfpack riders will sometimes add some extra challenge to the ride by including formidable hills in the route.

Special Events

The organizers of the Wolfpack Hustle occasionally put together special events, such as races and century rides, that do not follow the ordinary Wolfpack format. These events are usually held on weekends.

All City Team Race

The Wolfpack Hustle All City Team Race was held on July 8, 2007. Five-rider teams raced from the traditional Wolfpack starting point, Tang's Donut in Silverlake, to Dockweiler Beach. Each team was required to have at least one rider on a fixed gear bike. This rule was put in place to neutralize any disadvantages that a fixed drivetrain may have presented in a race with freewheeled bikes; however, as it turned out, the first team to finish was won by Team Dang... an all-fixed team composed of Josh, Alex, Evan, Jessy, and Scott, a combination of Wolfpack regulars and members of the LA Fixed website forums. The race had elements of excitement and suspense in the finish. Wolfpack A, a team composed of some of the fastest Wolfpack regulars: Cole, Chris, Will, Tony Z, and Wise had immediately become seperated from Cole at the start. Cole rode solo and cliqued up with different groups of racers he encountered on his route. Meanwhile Cubcamp composed of Richie, Annie, Brad, Antonio and John, who placed third over-all, experienced a set back as Annie had a crash. 4 of the 5 members of Wolfpack A crossed the finish line ahead of the field by approximately 4-5 minutes, however without Cole the team did not have a finish. Team Dang... the next group to arrive, crossed the line completely and won the race with Cole crossing a mere 7 seconds later to bring Wolfpack A the second place finish. Cubcamp crossed the line 30 seconds later for the 3rd place win.

GOGA, was noted for being the only all female team to compete.

A non-race ride, leaving Tang's an hour before the race and also finishing at Dockweiler Beach, was led by Mr. Rollers. Following the race, a beach party and barbecue was held at the finish point.

The DROP Race

The Wolfpack DROP Race was a street race held in conjunction with the Los Angeles premiere of the MASH SF film on October 13, 2007. The race began at Griffith Observatory and finished at the Vine Theater in Hollywood, where the film was to be shown. The event was open to fixed gear riders only, and got its name from the very steep and long descent down Vermont Avenue from the Observatory to Los Feliz (there was no way to avoid the drop if one had any hope of winning the race). Prizes were awarded to the top-finishing male and female riders at a ceremony on stage at the theater.

All City Century

The Wolfpack All City Century was a 100+ mile ride held on November 5, 2007.
