Conception and Formation
In late 2007, after the success of the Storm the Bastille ride concept at Santa Monica City Council and Pasadena City Council, Stephen Box began discussing the creation of a squad of people who would attend public meetings in support of cycling initiatives. Stephen and Enci then reorganized the idea around a coordinated effort to blog certain issues in coordination with meeting attendance.
In January 2008 he and his wife Enci Box organized the first meeting of the Bike Writers Collective for Monday, January 21st, 2008. They invited a "dirty dozen" group of activists and bloggers. Of those, Zach Behrens, Stephen Box, Mikey Wally, Mark Peterson, Erik Knutzen, Eric Richardson, Enci Box, and Alex Thompson attended. The group discussed several initiatives, and emerged with a consensus to draft a Cyclist's Bill of Rights, coordinate regular blogging on cycling issues, and take an active role in influencing the Los Angeles Bicycle Advisory Committee.

2008 Los Angeles Bicycle Master Plan Update
The Bike Writers Collective was formed just in time to attack the process behind the 2008 Los Angeles Bicycle Master Plan Update. The update of the 2002 Los Angeles Bicycle Master Plan has been characterized by the Bike Writers Collective as having a insufficient role for the community.
