Segregated bicycle facilities are bikeways where cyclists have exclusive right of way. This means that neither motor vehicles or pedestrians are permitted to use the facility. In the United States these facilities are typically Bicycle Paths, but Bicycle Lanes could also fall in this category. Many segregated facilities which are in practice shared with pedestrians. A further ambiguity exists - in California the state law does not allow a bike only facility however many bike paths are marked bike only when in fact pedestrians are not prohibited, and cannot be according to California law.
