The Santa Monica Police Department polices Santa Monica. With respect to cycling they are most notable for their harassment of Santa Monica Critical Mass. Beginning in July 2007 the SMPD consistently sent officers to observe the ride. It is not clear what caused SMPD to focus attention on SMCM after ignoring an conspicuously large group for over 2 years. Partly, it could be a result of an incident in June 2007 where a cyclist participating in that months SMCM was pulled over for a running a stop sign, and subsequently fled.
