The Critical Mass concept started in San Francisco in September 1992 and has spread to cities all over the world. There is no good estimate of the present number of critical mass rides around the world, but in LA County alone there are 7 monthly Critical Mass rides, which constitutes only a small fraction of the social bike rides in LA.
