Structure, Mission & Governance

Mission Statement

Bikerowave's mission statement, approved by a unanimous vote of the volunteers in June 2007:

Bikerowave is a bicycle repair collective, much like Bike Kitchen or Bike Oven. We teach people how to fix their bicycles, as well as provide the tools and equipment. We are a not-for-profit all volunteer organization. Our goal is to empower cyclists with the basic knowledge to maintain their steed, as well as enable them to more easily connect with the cycling community.

History

Necessity, Discussion & Genesis

As bike culture in West LA matured many participants began to recognize the essential function that the Bike Kitchen filled in growing bike culture in mid city LA. Eventually a small group of culture regulars, including Dan de Vriend, Dave Auerbach, Scott Sing, and Yolanda Hodde formed an email list called 310cocina where they began discussing the possibility of an organization like the Bike Kitchen located in West LA. In parallel Zack Beatty, Alex Thompson, Alec Schwarz, Brian Davidson, Max Lucas and others had been discussing the same topic.

These two groups connected, and the 2nd group was added to the email list. The newly energized group quickly organized a meeting for Saturday, September 16th, 2006. The meeting was attended by Alec Schwarz, Alex Thompson, Barbara Filet, Brian Davidson, Dan de Vriend, Dave Auerbach, David Benoff, Kent Strumpell, Mattias Derynck, Scott Sing, Yolanda Hodde, and Zack Beatty. This group discussed what the right structure for a Westside Bike Co-op would be, how to start one with a tiny budget, what the level of interest was, and what to call the eventual organization.
