Types of lights

Front-facing lights

The two most common methods for illumination are LED and halogen. Emitted light is white.

LEDs have become increasingly popular due to their light weight and low energy consumption compared to other lighting systems.

Mounting options

Front-facing lights are most typically mounted on the handlebars between the stem and the grips.

Rear-facing lights

Often referred to as "tail lights", rear-facing lights are most always red.

Mounting options

Bike-mounted

Tail lights can be mounted to the bike in a number of places. The easiest, and most common, place for attachment is the seat tube. Other areas for attachment include the seat-stays, chain-stays or seat.

Clip-mounted

Most rear lights come equipped with a clip on the backside enabling you you affix the light to articles of clothing, belts, bags or other gear.

Why its a good idea to have lights

The nighttime is an especially dangerous time for a cyclist, wherever you live. Vehicles often times have difficulty seeing you even if you are traveling in an illuminated area. Having blinking lights on your bike or your body makes a visual beacon which (if used properly) make it hard for drivers not to see you.
