Construction

Bikes can be made to utilize a grill in a few different methods. They can be fixed to a hard-point on the bike (such as a rear-mounted pannier rack or fabricated mount) or be towed on a trailer pulled by the bike.

Some would say that the latter option would negate the bike itself being called a barbecue bike.

Since grills for barbecue bikes are adapted from regular consumer grills, the two most common types of fuel are charcoal and propane. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Charcoal

  • Advantages
    • Can be smaller, and thus more portable
    • Easier to mount to a bicycle
    • Charcoal is easier to find in a store
    • Hotter grill, less cook time
  • Disadvantages
    • Little-to-no heat control
    • Hot coals take longer to heat up/cool down
    • Poses safety hazard while traveling between "grilling sessions"

Propane

  • Advantages
    • Cleaner burning fuel
    • Controllable temperature
    • Cleaner grill (no ash)
    • Faster
    • Preparation and cleanup is easier
  • Disadvantages
    • Bulky Liquid Propane tank
    • Having a LP tank on a bike is inherently dangerous, and most likely illegal
    • Replacement fuel is harder to come by
