Disciplines
Two forms of BMX riding.
Racing
Riding around a track most often made of dirt.
Bike Setup
BMX racing bikes are built to be light, yet stiff enough to cope with the torque of hard, fast peddling. Racing tires often times have aggressive "knobby" tread patterns to handle tight turning on dirt surfaces.
Governing Organizations
- American Bicycle Association
- National Bicycle Association
- National Bicycle League
Freestyle
Freestyle BMX evolved out of racing in the late 1980's.
Bike Setup
Freestyle BMX bikes, not necessarily focused on being light, can take on many different configurations depending on the personal style and type of riding of the rider. Instead, more of an emphasis is shifted to strength.
Dirt Jumping
Done on shaped mounds of Earth.
Street or "Park"
Done in an urban environment or within a skatepark.
Flatland
Stationary tricks.
Vert
Half-pipe riding.
