Social Rides
Alex goes to many rides, religiously attending Santa Monica Critical Mass, C.R.A.N.K. MOB, and Venice Critical Mass.
Santa Monica Critical Mass
Alex has often taken a leadership role at Santa Monica Critical Mass. This was most obvious when the Santa Monica Police Department began harassing the ride in July '07. Since then he has written several editorials, spoken with media at the Santa Monica Daily Press, LA Times, LA Weekly, and Fox 11, and arranged for meetings with the Police. He led organizing efforts to Storm The Bastille by speaking out at Santa Monica City Council after police cited 32 riders at the November 2007 ride.
Because of his involvement, Alex has been criticized for leading a leaderless ride.
Writing
Alex writes about Bike Activism and bike culture on Westside BikeSIDE! and writes for the LA Times blog Emerald City on a weekly basis. He also occasionally gets published on CICLE.org Some drafts of current work:
Riding Style
Alex can't ride handless, doesn't ride fixed, and falls off his bike easily. No skillz.
Demeanor
Alex Thompson is generally too serious for his own good, though he has been known to indulge in FUN.
Non Bike Life
Alex is a 6th year PhD student at UCLA in Math. Mathematically he is self described as "good but not great". A draft of published work is available here. His housemate Colin Hinde is a strong supporter of bicycle thieves.
No math jokes!
Self explanatory.
